My HomeLab Story and Requirements...

The above parts list is my best take on assembling a powerful 4u HomeLab. My goal is to make the most storage possiable for under 3k .

I would like to use my homelab for Media, Security, Network Storage, File Serving, Personal Cloud, and Entertainment.

2u is for equipment and 2u I would like to keep as open rack space.

I wanted to keep a switch and modem on a 1u shelf. That's why I selected the 16 port Bufflo switch and the Arris 8200 surfboard. The dimensions for both fits in the 1u setup and the modem works with most major cable providers (excluding At&t and Verizon)

A second 1u would house an HP Proliant DL360 G7 with a minimum of 2.53GHz Processors and 128GB RAM. The remaining 2u's I would like to keep open for additional equipment.

I have no desire to build out a large 24u or 48u rack. But I did want to understand rack servers, homelabs, and how the cloud really works. Google, AWS, and Azure cloud is built on rack servers and blade servers. The blade enclosure is costly so I focused on how to make the best rack server possible.

I fully understand that the point of a rack server is to have room to scale. I have no intentions of building out more than 4u or 6u. My goal is to have the most powerful equipment in the smallest rack (4u). I would view this parts list as a starter kit for building a Homelab that is compact, powerful, and also a great value.

I spent endless nights searching for server components that would work together. I found it to be really fun and educational! But as I tried to talk with other people about servers and the cloud I would get little enthusiasm and feedback. Mostly because people really did not understand the topic. That's when I decided to reach out to the Homelab community on Reddit.

The issue with servers and home networks is that people either get really overpowered equipment or they purchase a hot deal that is quickly maxed out or outdated. I'm trying to build a parts list that gives you the most value for your space and dollars.

This list was put together because I really wanted to get the homelaber's thoughts on this network solution.

The goal is to build a 4u lab that could also be used as a kit to meet the needs of homes and small businesses.

I'm just getting into servers, and Home Networks. I have a tight budget and am looking for feedback before I invest in all the equipment.

Thanks for your time,

If you have any thoughts on, better equipment, something I left out, or how to improve this configuration please email me at: [email protected]
